Gardening + Google Lens & GPT

If I had a nickel for every time I had to walk by someoneā€™s home and ask myself what plants theyā€™re growing that make their yard look so neat and beautiful, Iā€™d be rich.

Little did I know, all I needed was to snap a pic of any plant, tree, flower, or weed that intrigued me and Iā€™d get an answer in real-time from Google Lens.

Iā€™m telling you, this is a grand tool for identifying plants because unlike any other plant ID apps out there, this oneā€™s free within apps you probably already have on your phone.

When combined with the power of ChatGPT, you can create a gardening cheat sheet to finally get your dream garden.

Hereā€™s how to unlock Google Lens for plant identification:

Now this will require you to be sneaky (or not), depending on how comfortable you feel about your neighbors possibly catching you taking a photo of their yard plants, but youā€™ll need to open your camera and snap a photo of that yard you always walk by and have always been jealous about.

Pro Tip: Take photos focused on specific plants to get more accurate ID results. Capture a wider angle if you want to ID multiple plants in one photo.

Google Lens on Android phones:

  1. Download the Google Photos app.

  2. Select the photo you took and tap the Google Lens icon labeled ā€œLens.ā€

Use Google Lens inside the Google Photos app to ID plants.

  1. Type in ā€œWhat plant is this?ā€ in the search bar that appears.

  2. Google will show you a page of visual matches with the photo selection.

  1. Tap on your preferred result to get more information about the plant in question.

Google Lens on iPhones:

  1. Download the Google App and log in to your Google account.

  2. Tap the camera icon in the search bar to use Google Lens.

The camera icon takes you to Google Lens in the Google App.

  1. Allow the app to access your photo gallery and then select the image you took earlier.

  2. Google will identify the plant/s in the photo by flashing the name/s at the bottom of the screen.

Google Lens correctly identifies the selected subjects in photos.

  1. Select the identified plant to get to a search results page where you can learn more about it.

Google Lens on Desktop:

  1. Go to google.com to use Google Lens.

  2. Click on the camera icon.

The camera icon takes you to Google Lens on the desktop.

  3. Upload your photo.

  4. Scan through the visual lookup results to see if thereā€™s a match for your plant or weed.

Google Lens uses reverse image search, making it a reliable free plant finder online.

  1. I recommend that you look for images on .edu or .gov sites to get information about your plant from credible sources.

Bonus: If you feel like having a more conversational way of identifying plants, you can opt to use ChatGPT Vision instead.

  1. Download ChatGPT for Android or ChatGPT for Apple on your phone or simply log in to your OpenAI account on your mobile browser.

  2. Subscribe to ChatGPT Plus.

  3. Tap the plus button and click the photo button to capture a plant or choose an image of a plant in your gallery.

  4. Start chatting with ChatGPT about the plant in the selected image by entering the prompt ā€œWhat plant is this?ā€

Hereā€™s how to start garden planning with ChatGPT:

  1. Now that you know what plants you want to grow, launch ChatGPT and ask questions like "Will this plant work in [your specific conditions]?"

  2. Specify your location (i.e. South Florida where itā€™s often humid) and provide details of your soil pH and composition. This will give GPT a clearer context.

  3. Enter this prompt:

Use this ChatGPT prompt to generate a gardening cheat sheet

Voila! With this gardening cheat sheet, you can now start on your dream garden so you can get the yard youā€™ve always wanted.

I wouldnā€™t be surprised if you can never walk by other peopleā€™s houses without trying to snap a photo of their plants or yard after this.

Just make sure not to trespass any property lines or you might find yourself in a thorny situation (plant pun intended.)

Turning PDFs into Flashcards

Weā€™ve all been thereā€”needing to read through thousand-page PDF files. But who actually has time to read each and every word written on there?

I know so many people point out having to read lectures or documents in this format as their most dreaded task (and nobody would blame them.)

Gone are the days when everyone has to endure reading them word-for-word because there are AI hacks that make this a breeze now.

Hereā€™s how:

  1. Go to claude.ai and log in or create your account.

  2. Click ā€œAdd Contentā€ and select the PDF file from your device.

  3. Type in this prompt and hit enter.

  4. Copy Claude's summary and paste it into ChatGPT. Donā€™t forget to write "Convert this into Flashcards" before hitting enter.

Pro Tip: Be sure to describe your desired format for the flashcards by specifying the structure, layout, or any specific details you want to include in the flashcards.

  1. Review the flashcard content generated by ChatGPT and export them to Canva or a digital flashcard tool like Scholarly.

Weā€™re all about making life easy here. Having to read through literally hundreds to thousands of words is one of those things that we can just leave in the past.

Download this guide to save this hack and overcome any PTSD from studying with e-books.

TLDR news highlights

Grok is Open to Anything: Weak Safeguards

X has rolled out its shiny new AI chatbot, Grok. The catch is that you can only get your hands on it if youā€™re an X Premium subscriber.

Since its announcement, Grok has barely been recognized for its efficiency or accuracy but has been making headlines for its complete lack of censorship.

The scoop is that the chatbot is supposed to have safeguards for safe and appropriate use, but they seem to be about as effective as a zipper on a vault as some users have already used Grok to generate inappropriate depictions of political figures.

I wouldnā€™t be surprised if Musk dropped the cliche we all know and love (or hate) ā€œBad publicity is still publicity.ā€

Brainy AI, Literally

The Swiss tech wizards at FinalSpark have just rolled out a game-changing program where you can rent "biocomputers" for just $500 a monthā€”as in AI made from human brain cells.

Theyā€™re called organoids and are up to 100,000 times more efficient than traditional silicone chips as their AI models are comprehensively trained, even on dopamine for that "feel-good" learning.

Mind-blowing, right? All I can imagine is Wednesday Addamsā€™ friend Thing, but instead of a hand, a walking, living, fully-formed brain.

Since weā€™re now using real human neurons and fusing them with AI to create brain organoidsā€¦

Google DeepMind

Google Deepmindā€™s robotic arm unlocked table tennis skills that could pass Olympic standards someday.

How? You might ask.

Well, this bot's got data so good it can already take on human playersā€”and win. Out of 29 matches, it managed to school 13 opponents, giving it a smashing 45% success rate.

Imagine the speed, coordination, and dexterity it possesses to be able to do that. I say, not bad for something that canā€™t even physically serve a ball.

But seriously, if a robot can get this good in a sport against humans, imagine what it'll do when it's not just monkeying around. Weā€™re probably near to fulfilling Tony Starkā€™s dream of a ā€œsuit of iron around the world.ā€
